AI Course Creation on LearnWorlds Led by the 4 Ds
AI+LearnWorlds has made well-designed, engaging and successful academies affordable and achievable for small businesses. But a proven design process like the 4 Ds is the secret ingredient that delivers results.
We've used AI tools to develop learning interactions, branding, avatar videos, lead magnets, marketing plans and more for five very different clients. Some work that used to take weeks now takes hours. Work that used to need a studio, an illustrator, a video crew, and a copywriter now just needs a well-defined plan and people who know what good looks like. The tools make that possible, but they don't make it inevitable. The key is to start with the needs of the people who use your academy and keep coming back to those needs as you develop. This page shows how that works.
By AI course design, we mean using AI tools inside a structured design process, so that the speed and power of AI comes with the judgement and creative direction of a learning designer.
The double diamond is the process behind every build.
The double diamond is a design process the British Design Council popularised in 2005. It has two diamonds: the first finds the right problem and the second finds the right solution. Each one opens out to explore many options, then narrows to a decision. AI helps most in the wide parts, and people make the decisions in the narrow ones.
Go round again
Select a stage to see it on the diagram.
- Diverge: explore widely
What do the people we are designing for really need?
- Where AI helps
- Summarises transcripts, reviews, research and competitor material into patterns.
- What people still do
- Talk to the experts and the learners, and notice what the data misses.
- Converge: narrow down
What exactly are we solving, and how will we know it worked?
- Where AI helps
- Tests the brief for gaps and contradictions.
- What people still do
- Decide what the problem is, and agree the brief.
- Diverge: explore widely
What could the solution look like?
- Where AI helps
- Produces many options, and working prototypes, in hours.
- What people still do
- Choose, direct, reject what does not fit, and shape what is left.
- Converge: narrow down
Does it work for the people it is for, and is it ready to ship?
- Where AI helps
- Checks links, layouts and facts, and builds the final pages.
- What people still do
- Test with the client and real learners, then sign it off.
With AI, the same budget goes further and the ceiling is higher. Quizzes and flip cards are no longer the limit. We can build coaching with live voices, realistic scenarios that respond to what the learner says, and tools that help people put your expertise into practice step by step. We can also let AI read your LearnWorlds data and point out what you are missing.
What a small team can now build on one academy.
A single project can now include all six of these, from the same team and the same budget.
- Interactive tools and practice activitiesThat help learners decide, plan, or rehearse and implement their learning so they get results.
- A consistent brand systemWith coherent colour, shape, spacing, and tone, so everything feels cohesive.
- Avatar videosWith captions and motion graphics made in minutes instead of days.
- Lead magnetsThat give visitors genuinely useful information in exchange for an email address, all from your existing content.
- A marketing plan with the assets to matchFrom teaser videos and landing pages to email sequences and social media strategies.
- Extra content cut from what you already haveSuch as bitesize videos, interactive guides and coaching cards.
None of this works without a plan. Now you could do all of that without us. But a basic prompt gets you a basic result. What separates a good AI-enabled academy from a generic one is how we harness the AI to deliver to your context.
A prompt gives you content. A process gives you an experience.
| Area | A simple prompt | A designed process |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Stock layouts and stock images | A palette, type and shape system built for your brand, then applied everywhere |
| Journey | A list of pages | A planned path for each visitor, from first visit to first lesson |
| Learning | Text and a quiz at the end | Short videos, engaging activities, and checks built around what learners want to achieve |
| Selling | A page that describes the course | Assets that answer the buyer's questions at each step |
| Accuracy | Whatever the model produced | Every claim checked against a source |
| Method | One draft, accepted as it comes | Multiple options, client reviews, and agreed changes before we publish |
AI speeds up and multiplies the work in every row of that table, but it needs direction and segmentation. That takes four flavours of design, and each one needs an expert to guide it.
The 4 design disciplines you need
Every successful site needs four types of design on every build.
- A palette, type, shape and image style that make every page feel like one brand.
- How it feels to use your site, so every visitor finds their way on any device.
- Starting from what learners need to be able to do, then building the practice that gets them there.
- What buyers need to see before they say yes, and how they find you in the first place.
A brand that feels like everything belongs together.
Visual design covers palette, type, shape and image style, and the aim is for every page to feel like one brand. AI helps by producing illustration options, vector shapes and layout variants in minutes, so you can compare real options instead of just imagining them.
A journey that works for your audience on every device.
User experience is about how it feels for people to use your site. It's about making things easy, making it obvious how to achieve their goals. AI helps by prototyping journeys quickly, writing custom HTML and CSS where the platform has gaps, and auditing pages for broken links and layout errors.
Learning that enables people to do, not just watch.
Learning experience design starts with the outcomes you want learners to achieve, then works back to the best ways to scaffold that experience and support their motivation and learning throughout that process. AI helps by drafting storyboards, scenarios, quiz questions and interactive tools from your source material, and by quickly cutting long recordings into short, ordered videos.
Assets that answer the buyer's questions.
Marketing and sales experience design asks who buys, what they need to see before they say yes, and how they find you in the first place. AI helps by speeding up research, drafting articles, turning transcripts into content, and checking every line of copy against your voice guide.
How We Stay in Control of AI.
Speed without control produces confident errors, so these checks run on every build.
- A voice guide and a checker
A script scans every page for banned words, em dashes and spelling in the wrong English before anyone reads it.
- No invented facts
We use no statistics, quotes, prices or legal claims unless a named source backs them, and anything unverified carries a flag until the client confirms it. Accreditation wording in a plan, for example, is marked for the client to check.
- Frame-by-frame checks on generated media
On one sports coaching course we checked every generated still and animation, and rejected several for errors in technique. The cards also list what the AI could not reproduce, so the course owner knows what to check.
- Timing and script checks on avatar videos
Each avatar video is transcribed and its word count compared with the script, and any pause over 1.5 seconds is flagged before graphics are added.
- Source checks
On one project they caught a figure in a transcript that looked like a typo, so the page quoted no figure until the founder confirmed it.
- People sign off
The client reviews each stage, and a learning designer reads every line before it ships.
- Written handoff
Every decision lives in a file, so the next session or the next person starts where the last one stopped.
What this means for your academy.
- If you are an expert with knowledge in your head, your slides, and your PDFsNo course yet? We turn it into short lessons with a clear path, a brand of its own and assets that sell.
- If you are running a membership or communityWe give it a consistent look, a joining journey that makes sense on a phone, and a steady flow of new content you can keep up with.
- If you are building a company academyWe design what staff do afterwards, set up who sees what, and make the evidence of learning easy to report.
This approach also works if you feel like your LearnWorlds academy needs a revamp, if you've tried AI and got generic results, or if you run a small team that needs more content more often.

Questions we hear most.
What is AI course design?
AI course design is the use of AI tools inside a structured design process. The process covers four areas: how a course looks, how people move through it, how they learn from it and how they find and buy it. AI speeds up the work, and people make the decisions.
What is the double diamond design process, and why does it matter for online courses?
The double diamond is a design process with two rounds of exploring and then focusing. The first round finds the right problem (discover and define) and the second finds the right solution (develop and deliver). It matters for online courses because AI can produce a finished-looking course very quickly, and the double diamond is how you check that it solves the right problem for your learners.
Can you build a LearnWorlds course with AI?
Yes. LearnWorlds includes AI tools for course outlines, assessments and page copy, and we also use Claude for storyboards, video scripts, custom interactions and page builds. AI writes the first draft. A learning designer then shapes it and checks it before it goes live.
Can you make avatar videos for my course?
Yes. We write the script, produce the presenter video in HeyGen, then add captions and motion graphics so the video teaches as well as talks. You review the script before any video is made.
Will my course sound like AI wrote it?
No. We write a voice guide from your own material and ban stock AI phrases. A script checks every draft against the guide, and a person edits it by hand.
How is this different from using ChatGPT or Claude myself?
A chatbot gives you text. A design process gives you decisions: your visual system, your learner journey, your course structure and your marketing plan. We also bring LearnWorlds knowledge and the checks described above. You can do part of this yourself, and our training shows you how.
Is AI-generated course content accurate?
Not on its own. Models make errors and state them with confidence, so we check each claim against a source and flag anything we cannot verify for you to confirm.
Do I need to know how to use AI?
No. Every service works without it. If you want to learn, we train you on the same workflows we use.
Can you improve a LearnWorlds academy I already have?
Yes. We start with a review of your pages, emails, checkout and tracking, and you get a list of fixes in order of impact. We can make them for you or train your team to make them.
How much does it cost?
A basic build starts from £999 + VAT. A single course typically starts from £1,600, and a full academy typically costs £3,000–£10,000, plus VAT where it applies. We scope each build after a call, so you know the exact price before work starts. Ongoing support rates are on our services page.
